Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins are large, ropey, dilated veins that appear to bulge out on the lower legs and thighs. In some cases they may also appear in the groin area, arms, and abdomen. These veins can cause pain, itching, and swelling. In some cases, bleeding may occur. Varicose veins can be found in both men and women, though they are more common in women. For example, if a woman"s mother or father has varicose veins, she has a 60% chance of being affected whereas a man will have about a 25% risk of disease. Age also plays a role with varicose veins, with chances increasing with age. In unusual cases, varicose veins may arise from previous trauma. The good news here is that this form of venous disease is usually the more easily approached. On your first visit a physical exam and ultrasound evaluation will be done and a plan of treatment outlined. You will often be required to undergo a trial of conservative therapy before any curative procedure can be performed, but we will explain all this to you and answer any questions you may have.

Spider Veins

Like the name, these veins often appear to look like "spiders." Spider veins are small veins that can appear anywhere on the body, but are most common on the legs, being found on the thighs, ankles, feet, and calve area. Aside from their unsightly appearance, spider veins may also cause pain and swelling. In some incidences, bleeding may occur. Spider veins usually have their origin from the superficial venous system, though ultrasound is often needed to rule out venous reflux from a deeper system of veins.

Leg Swelling

Leg Swelling can be the result of a number of problems including heart disease, endocrine problems, or being overweight. In some situations, leg swelling can be a result from venous reflux. The location of this reflux will determine what may be done to alleviate the problem. On your first visit, our certified staff will be able to fully evaluate your problem to see if vein disease is the culprit behind your leg swelling.

Venous Ulcers

Venous Ulcers are a the most severe form of venous disease. Left untreated venous reflux may progress to swelling, inflammation, and eventual skin breakdown. Much can be done to prevent this problem, but when it does occur there are a number of treatments that can dramatically reduce pain and downtime. Our staff will be able to perform a full diagnostic work evaluation of the condition and often start therapy on the first visit. This may be as simple as prescribing proper support stockings, beginning proper wound care and dressings or even performing minimally invasive procedures here in the office to start you on the road to recovery.
